    What Should Be Done To Prevent Light Pollution?

    Light has had a very important place throughout human history. When we cannot benefit sufficiently from the sun, our natural light source, we use various light sources to illuminate our environment sufficiently. Especially in the evening when the sun has set, if we are not asleep, we definitely benefit from a light source.

    Even though light is an indispensable part of our lives, excessive or unnecessary use of it results in Light Pollution.

    Light pollution, which is one of the various pollutions experienced around the world such as environmental pollution and air pollution, creates major health and financial problems, even if it is not fully realized.

    Since light pollution is a big problem, questions like "What should be done to prevent light pollution?" are frequently asked about this issue.

    In this article, we will answer the questions of what is light pollution, what are the types of light pollution and what should be done to prevent light pollution.

    What is Light Pollution?

    The sun, our natural light source, does not cause light pollution. Light pollution can be defined as unnecessary, misdirected, and artificial light that is at a level that disturbs living things. As can be guessed from the explanation, light pollution is generally experienced in crowded cities. Because as the human population in an area increases, the amount of light needed at night also increases, and this leads to light pollution.

    Contrary to popular belief, light pollution is not just a pollution that spoils the visual pleasure and causes eye diseases. Light pollution harms almost all living creatures, including us humans, in various ways. For example; wild animals perform many of their activities according to day-night cycles, but these cycles are affected by light pollution. In addition, light pollution negatively affects the atmospheric layer, causing air pollution and unnecessary energy consumption, which increases environmental pollution.

    What are the Types of Light Pollution?

    Types of light pollution are as follows;

    • Light Flooding: Light illuminating unnecessary or unwanted areas.
    • Glare: Due to our ability to see, we can see up to a certain level of illumination. However, if the light exceeds this limit, it negatively affects our ability to see and we may not be able to see the object we are looking at. In other words, if the light source is more visible than the object it illuminates, we cannot see the object. In this case, the lighting is bad and we face a problem called glare.
    • Vertical Light: Light that goes directly into the sky with almost no use and is considered the biggest cause of light pollution.
    • Excessive Amount of Light: We need a certain amount of lighting to do a job. If the lighting level is unnecessarily high, we are using excessive amounts of light, which leads to light pollution.

    These are the types of light pollution.

    How can light pollution be prevented?

    Although light pollution is a serious problem, light pollution can actually be prevented with simple measures that can be taken collectively. We can answer the question of what should be done to prevent light pollution as follows;

    • Light must be directed at the right angle and to the right area.
    • Protected outdoor lighting fixtures can be used.
    • Nowadays, the use of systems that illuminate the environment when motion is detected in some areas (for example, in apartment buildings) can be made widespread.
    • Unnecessary, unused lights can be turned off.
    • Training can be given to people to prevent light pollution.
    • Required lighting standards must be adhered to.
    • The number of street lights can be reduced, especially in areas with heavy vehicle traffic in big cities.

    In short, unnecessary light should not be used and lighting systems should be arranged correctly.
